Tom French.

Painter Tom French just posted a number of new paintings in preparation for his upcoming exhibition titled Don’t Look Back at Zero Cool Gallery in London later this month. French’s acrylic works often depict couples in seemingly amorous relationships that create the optical illusion of a skull, pieces that walk the line between beautiful and unsettling. Just squint or take a few steps back from your monitor for maximum effect. You can see much more of his work on Flickr, and prints are available at Zero Cool. (by Christopher )

You probably already saw these ones some time back in the past, but here I am once more, doing what I do best… keeping track of the good stuff.

Seth Casteel, a lifestyle pet photographer from Los-Angeles was struck by the lightning of fame when we posted these photos on the internet.

“Underwater dogs” is a series of dog portraits that would scare even the meanest deep water beasts…

How Rich is Mitt Romney?

liberalsarecool:

Associated Press: “Add up the wealth of the last eight presidents, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama. Then double that number. Now you’re in Romney territory. He would be among the richest presidents in American history if elected — probably in the top four.”

Somehow the richest, “I inherited my wealth”, most out-of-touch newfound, radical  Republican “trying to act crazy to blend in” candidate is not he answer.

Suicide Cells
Researchers find that people have have committed suicide have more of a particular kind of neuron -call von Economo neurons- which are believed to be an import cell for social emotions, maybe even empathy and guilt.
These cells bear receptors for neurotransmitters that help to regulate emotion, such as dopamine, serotonin and vasopressin. Because they are found in highly gregarious animals such as whales, elephants and apes—with humans possessing the highest densities—scientists believe they might specifically deal with complex social emotions such as shame. (via)

The density of VENs (von Economo neurons) was significantly greater in the ACC of suicide victims with psychotic disorders compared with psychotic individuals who died from other causes. This effect was restricted to the right ACC. VEN density in the ACC seems to be increased in suicide victims with psychosis. This finding may support the assumption that VEN have a special role in emotion processing and self-evaluation, including negative self-appraisal.

Full article here.
My research now is about the lack of empathy relating to cruelty to others and what neural correlates are involved -so I have to wonder to what degree would a significant absence of these von Economo neurons explain the low levels of empathy in psychopaths, sociopaths, narcissists, and people with borderline personality disorder?

"Drug hallucinations look real in the brain"

psydoctor8:

[Researchers] asked the volunteers to look at images of people or animals while their brains were scanned using functional MRI, then asked the volunteers to close their eyes and imagine they were still viewing the image. Unsurprisingly, the researchers found that neural activity in the primary visual cortex dropped off when volunteers imagined seeing the image rather than actually viewing it.

But when the team then gave the volunteers a dose of ayahuasca and repeated the experiment, they found that the level of activity in the primary visual cortex was virtually indistinguishable when the volunteers were really viewing an image and when they were imagining it. This means visions seen have a real, neurological basis, says de Araujo – they are not made up or imagined.  (Via

Thus explains the 90’s.  Nah, just kiddin’.  Um, anyhoo,  if you think this is interesting (AND IT IS) then please jump over here and give my long time friend below, Jerónimo M.M., a little consideration. Check out the video, it’s important work and he only has a few days to fund this project to make it happen. So if all you guys gave a dollar you’d sorta be co-producers, right? How’d you get so awesome!?

Ayahuasca may also find its way into the psychiatrist’s drug kit. The pharmacology of its ingredients tallies with the way some conventional drugs work; because of this, researchers are interested in ayahuasca’s potential for treating addiction, depression or conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. One of the brew’s two ingredients is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi, which contains chemicals that act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors – a major class of antidepressant drugs. The other ingredient is the shrub Psychotria viridis: it contains the powerful hallucinogen DMT (dimethyltryptamine), which acts on the mood-altering serotonergic system, the target of antidepressants such as Prozac.
